🪵 Build a DIY Kids Sand Pit Using Timber Sleepers from Kelvin Timber
A garden sand pit is a great outdoor project for families — fun, safe, and surprisingly simple to build. Using our 2.4m treated sleepers, hex screws, and weed control fabric, you can create a long-lasting sand pit frame in a weekend!
✅ Materials You’ll Need (Available at Kelvin Timber)
Treated Railway Sleepers – 2.4m x 200mm x 100mm
Hex Screws (Coach Head) – Recommended: 150mm length
Weed Control Fabric – Landscape Fabric Roll
🧰 You’ll also need basic tools: drill with socket bit, saw (if you’re cutting sleepers at home), sandpaper, and a spade.
📏 Recommended Sand Pit Size
Since our sleepers are 2.4m long and cannot be cut in-store, we recommend building a 2.4m x 1.2m rectangular sand pit using 4 sleepers.
Use 2 full sleepers per long side (2.4m)
Cut 2 sleepers in half at home for the short sides (1.2m)
This gives you a neat rectangle, approx. 2.4m x 1.2m, ideal for small garden spaces.
🔩 Why 150mm Hex Screws?
Our 150mm hex screws are ideal for securely fixing sleepers at the corners. They offer strong hold for thick 100mm timber and work perfectly with a pre-drilled pilot hole and socket attachment on a power drill.
🧱 Step-by-Step Build Guide
Choose a level area with sun and shade. Mark out 2.4m x 1.2m.
Dig and level the space to ensure the sleepers sit flush and stable.
Lay your sleepers into a rectangle (2 long, 2 short).
Drill pilot holes in corners and fix with 150mm hex screws.
Lay weed control fabric inside the pit to prevent weeds and worms coming through.
Sand any rough edges for safety.
Fill with play sand (available from local DIY stores or online).
Add a cover when not in use — a tarp or custom wooden lid works well.
🎯 Final Touches
Add buckets, spades, and toys
Use decking oil or timber treatment (optional) to protect sleepers
Add a soft seating edge or lid for dual use
