Role Overview:
The Yard Supervisor at Kelvin Timber, Milngavie, is responsible for the smooth daily operations of the yard alongside our Yard Manager. This includes maintaining a safe and efficient workspace, ensuring stock and equipment are managed effectively, and supporting broader business needs. This role requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and a hands-on approach to maintain high standards in safety, quality, and operational efficiency.

Key responsibilities include managing stock processes, coordinating maintenance, planning yard improvements, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Health & Safety:
    Implement and maintain a safe working environment, including fire safety and risk management protocols.
  • Efficiency Improvements:
    Identify opportunities to improve processes, safety, and operational quality.
  • Team Management:
    Lead the yard team, assign tasks, and ensure alignment with business needs.
  • Collaboration:
    Work with the Production and Workshop Managers to coordinate tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Infrastructure Oversight:
    Manage yard infrastructure, including planning and implementing maintenance and improvements.
  • Stock Management:
    Oversee stock processes, including supply, monitoring, and reporting for timber, fixings, and other materials. Conduct regular stock and equipment checks.
  • General Yard Maintenance:
    Maintain a clean, hazard-free yard, ensuring all housekeeping tasks are completed.
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    Conduct regular vehicle checks and cleaning to support safe material transport.
  • Material Transport:
    Organise and manage the transportation of materials to and from job sites.
  • Subcontractor Management:
    Coordinate external contractors (e.g., electricians, plumbers) for specialised work.
  • Waste Management:
    Ensure efficient handling of waste and recycling, including sawdust and offcuts.
  • Landscaping & Aesthetics:
    Manage basic landscaping tasks to maintain the yard’s appearance.

Essential Characteristics

  • Leadership & Team Management:
    Strong leadership skills to motivate and manage the team effectively, with clear communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Organisational & Planning Skills:
    Ability to prioritise tasks, manage stock, and oversee long-term infrastructure planning.
  • Safety-Oriented Mindset:
    Strong understanding of health and safety protocols and risk awareness to maintain a hazard-free environment.
  • Adaptability & Hands-On Approach:
    Flexible and willing to take on physical tasks when needed, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Decision-Making Under Pressure:
    Stay calm under pressure, make quick decisions, and manage responsibilities during busy periods.

General Skills

  • Knowledge of stock and inventory management.
  • Familiarity with safety and compliance regulations.

Company Description: Kelvin Timber is a family-run Timber and Builders Merchant located in Milngavie & Hamilton, on the outskirts of Glasgow. Established in 1970, we have been delivering knowledgeable service to both trade and public customers.

Job Title: Warehouse/ Yard Operative

Reports to: Yard Manager

Location: Kelvin Timber – Hamilton
Salary: Discussed at interview stage (negotiable)

Working Hours: 8.00 AM – 4:45pm

What does it mean to be a Kelvin Timber Warehouse/Yard Operative?

We are seeking a helpful and adaptable individual to handle and assist in yard operations, at our bustling timber and builder’s merchant branch in Hamilton.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manual loading and unloading of delivery vehicles or operation of side-loader/forklift truck
  • Assisting customers with collections and verifying orders
  • Organizing stock in storage areas and conducting sorting and grading tasks
  • Fulfilling orders by picking and packing items
  • Maintaining cleanliness and tidiness in work areas and ensuring compliance with health and safety policies and procedures, including manual handling guidelines
  • Checking customer vehicles before departure to minimize stock losses
  • Addressing inquiries from commercial customers or the public
  • Undertaking any other duties considered reasonable within the job role

Requirements to join our team:

  • Familiarity with warehouse operations and customer service
  • Awareness of health and safety protocols
  • Desirable (not essential): Forklift Truck (FLT) license

Availability for full-time work from Monday to Friday, with alternate Saturday mornings (8:00 AM – 01:00 PM)
